1.  Miguel divides 101 marbles equally among 8 friends.

a. How many marbles does each friend get?

b. How many marbles are left over? a. ----- marbles 101÷  8 = 12.625 or 12 marbles

 2.  Jose buys 12 peppermints and 2 goody bags for his party. He needs to put an equal amount in each bag.

a. How many peppermints can be put in each goody bag?

b. How many peppermints are left over? a. ------ peppermints 6  (12 ÷ 2)

  b. ----- peppermints 0    (12 ÷ 2) has no remainder

1.   A group of 557 people signed up for guitar lessons. Each class can have  a maximum of 16 students. What is the least number of classes needed?____ classes

557 ÷ 16= 34.8125 So 16 classes + 1 more class for the remainders= 17 classes
2. Mike has Rs. 298 761. If T-shirts cost Rs. 49 each, then how many T-shirts can he buy?_______ T-shirts 298.761 ÷ 49 = 6.097 of 6 T- shirts with some money left over
3. Which number when multiplied by 12 gives the product of 118512

118512÷12= 9876 (using fact families)

Difficult

1.   Pearl divided 58 pinwheels equally into 6 jars. She gave away all but 1 jar and the leftover pinwheels. How many pinwheels did she keep? _____ pinwheels

58 ÷ 6 =  9 R 2    HAS 9+2 = 11 PINWHEELS

2. Jenny and Gina each had the same number of erasers. Jenny gave 82 of her erasers to her friends and Gina gave  29 of her erasers to her siblings. Gina has  7 times as many erasers left as Jenny. How many erasers did each of them have at first?

J                        82  -  28  = 54

G       54  ÷  6    = 9        9 + 82 = 91 erasers

Challenging

Solve these word problems. SHOW WORKING CLEARLY STEP BY STEP

1. There are 5 times as many buttons in Bowl A as in Bowl B. There are 240 buttons

in both bowls. How many buttons must be transferred to Bowl B form Bowl A so that

both bowls have the same number of buttons?

6 units = 240       So 1 unit = 240 ÷ 6 = 40      So  5 units = 5 X 40 = 200

There are 40 buttons in Bowl B and 200 buttons in Bowl A

Now 240 ÷ 2 = 120     So, 240 – 120 =  80   So, 80 buttons to be transferred from A to B

2. A scientist has 39 spiders, ants and houseflies in his lab for an experiment. He counted

264 legs altogether. There were thrice as many ants as houseflies. How many ants did

the scientist keep in his laboratory? (Spiders have 8 legs while ants and houseflies have 6)

Assume there are 39 ants and flies   So 39X 6=  234

39 ants and houseflies have 234legs    Now 264-234 =  30

Each ant/Housefly has 2 legs less than each spider       So 30÷2 = 15  Scts keeps  15 spiders

                               House flies                                    39-15 = 24

4 units = 24    1 unit = 6    3 units = 18   scientist keeps 18 ants

1. Multiply the quotient of 14508 and 18 by 2          806 X 2 = 1612

2. Denis bought a T- shirt for Rs 56. Jane bought an evening gown that cost 15 times as much as the shirt and Rs. 289 more. The evening gown cost Rs.____________

56 X 15=  840 +289 = 1129

3. Kent bought 29 packets of phonecards. If each packet contained 34 phonecards and he gave 50 of them to Tom, how many phone cards are left with him?

29 X 34 = 986 -50 = 936

Difficult

1. The total cost of a bag and a T- shirt was Rs. 19. Hari bought 4 such bags and 2 such T- shirts for Rs. 52. How much did a T- shirt cost?

1 B + 1 T=  19

4B +2 T=  52

4B + 4T = 4 X 19 = 76

        2T = 76 – 52 = 24

        1T = 24 ÷ 2 = 12

2. Monica collected 431 stickers and Azhar collected 216 fewer stickers than Monica.  If Sameer collected 5 times as many stickers as Azhar, how many stickers did they collect in all?

431- 216 = 215        5X 215 = 1075     1075 + 215 + 431 = 1721

Challenging

1. Joe arranged 124 of his toy soldiers to form a square by placing an equal number of toy soldiers along each side. How many toy soldiers did Joe arrange along two adjacent sides of the square?

124 – 4 = 120         So 120 ÷ 4 = 30       1+ 30 +1 +30 + 1 = 63 along adjacent sides

2.Han and Suman each collects a certain number of stickers every day. Han collects 5 stickers each day. By the 12th day of Han's collection Suman had collected  144 stickers. By the 20th day, Suman had collected 240 stickers. On which day would  their total be 170 stickers?
240 – 144 = 96    96 ÷ 8 = 12 ( andrea collects/ day)  

in 1 day Han + andrea collects 12 + 5 = 17    170 ÷ 7 = 10  on 10^th day they have 170
